AIMS: Very few cohort studies are available about the relation between remnant cholesterol (RC) and diabetes. Based on a prospective cohort survey, this research aimed at investigating if high RC was related to a future diabetes risk in the Chinese population, as well as to compare the association between RC, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), TG/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C), and future diabetes risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 6,700 baseline normoglycemic participants of the REACTION study's Beijing center were recruited in 2011-2012 and followed up in 2015. Multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to explore the relationship of RC, HDL-C, LDL-C, TC, TG, LDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C and a future diabetes risk. RESULTS: After potential confounders were adjusted for, only RC (HR 1.134, 95% CI 1.016-1.267, P = 0.025) was positively related to a future diabetes risk, and only HDL-C (HR 0.728, 95% CI 0.578-0.918, P = 0.007) was negatively related to a future diabetes risk. The rest of the lipid parameters were not related to a future risk of diabetes. Sensitivity and stratification analyses revealed that the relation between RC and future diabetes risk was stable. RC and future diabetes risk were still positively correlated even when the HDL-C was ≥1.04 mmol/L (HR 1.167, 95% CI 1.050-1.297, P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: It was RC, but not other lipid parameters, that was independently and positively related to a future risk of diabetes among the Chinese general population. Moreover, the relationship between RC and diabetes risk was stable, even with appropriate levels of HDL-C.

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have demonstrated a significant association between the presence of the ear lobe crease (ELC) and cardiovascular disease. Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) can affect the structures and functions of proteins and contribute to the development of diabetic complications. However, few studies have reported the relationship between AGEs and ELC. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation of skin autofluorescence (SAF)-AGEage (SAF-AGEs × age/100) with ELC. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 6500 eligible participants from two communities in Beijing. Skin autofluorescence (SAF) was used to measure skin AGEs (SAF-AGEs). SAF-AGEage was defined as AGEs × age/100. Binary logistic regression analysis and linear regression analysis nested in logistic models were applied to test outcomes. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of ELC with an average age of 62.7 years participants was 57.1% (n = 3714). Age, fasting blood glucose, systolic blood pressure, and lipoprotein cholesterol were all greater in participants with ELC. ELC-positive participants had higher prevalence of coronary heart disease. Logistic analysis showed a significantly positive relationship between quartiles of SAF-AGEage and ELC (odds ratio [OR] 1.526, 95% CI 1.324-1.759; OR 2.072, CI 1.791-2.396; and OR 2.983, CI 2.551-3.489) for the multivariate-adjusted models, respectively. Stratified research revealed that those with a history of diabetes, hypertension, or coronary heart disease experienced the connection between SAF-AGEage and ELC. CONCLUSION: ELC is associated with coronary heart disease, and the SAF-AGE has a potential role in ELC development in elder people.

It is generally believed that mycorrhiza is a microecosystem composed of mycorrhizal fungi, host plants and other microscopic organisms. The mycorrhiza of Rhododendron dauricum is more complex and the diverse morphology of our investigated results displays both typical ericoid mycorrhizal characteristics and ectomycorrhizal traits. The characteristics of ectendoomycorrhiza, where mycelial invade from the outside into the root cells, have also been observed. In order to further clarify the mycorrhizal fungi members and other fungal communities of R. dauricum mycorrhiza, and explore the effects of vegetation and soil biological factors on their community structure, we selected two woodlands in the northeast of China as samples-one is a mixed forest of R. dauricum and Quercus mongolica, and the other a mixed forest of R. dauricum, Q. mongolica, and Pinus densiflor. The sampling time was during the local growing season, from June to September. High-throughput sequencing yielded a total of 3020 fungal amplicon sequence variants (ASVs), which were based on sequencing of the internal transcribed spacer ribosomal RNA (ITS rRNA) via the Illumina NovaSeq platform. In the different habitats of R. dauricum, there are differences in the diversity of fungi obtained from mycorrhizal niches, and specifically the mycorrhizal fungal community structure in the complex vegetation of mixed forests, where R. dauricum is found, exhibits greater stability, with relatively minor changes over time. Soil fungi are identified as the primary source of fungi within the mycorrhizal niche, and the abundance of mycorrhizal fungi from mycorrhizal niches in R. dauricum is significantly influenced by soil pH, organic matter, and available nitrogen. The relationship between soil fungi and mycorrhizal fungi from mycorrhizal niches is simultaneously found to be intricate, while the genus Hydnellum emerges as a central genus among mycorrhizal fungi from mycorrhizal niches. However, there is currently a substantial gap in the foundational research of this genus, including the fact that mycorrhizal fungi from mycorrhizal niches have, compared to fungi present in the soil, proven to be more sensitive to changes in soil moisture.

Background: Kidney disease is related to visceral obesity. As a new indicator of obesity, body roundness index (BRI) has not been fully revealed with kidney disease. This study's objective is to assess the relationship between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and BRI among the Chinese population. Methods: This study enrolled 36,784 members over the age of 40, they were from 7 centers in China by using a random sampling method. BRI was computed using height and waist circumference, eGFR ≤ 90 mL/min/1.73 m2 was considered to indicate low eGFR. To lessen bias, propensity score matching was employed, multiple logistic regression models were utilized to examine the connection between low eGFR and BRI. Results: The age, diabetes and coronary heart disease rates, fasting blood glucose, and triglycerides were all greater in participants with low eGFR. The BRI quartile was still positively connected with low eGFR after controlling for confounding variables, according to multivariate logistic regression analysis. (OR [95%CI] Q2:1.052 [1.021-1.091], OR [95%CI] Q3:1.189 [1.062-1.284], OR [95%CI] Q4:1.283 [1.181-1.394], P trend < 0.001). Stratified research revealed that the elders, women, habitual smokers, and those with a history of diabetes or hypertension experienced the connection between BRI level and low eGFR. According to ROC, BRI was able to detect low eGFR more accurately. Conclusion: Low eGFR in the Chinese community is positively connected with BRI, which has the potential to be used as an effective indicator for screening kidney disease to identify high-risk groups and take appropriate measures to prevent subsequent complications.

BACKGROUND: The association between remnant cholesterol (RC) and diabetes remains unclear because of limited study and data. This study attempted to explore the association between RC and diabetes in a large sample, multicenter general population. METHODS: The current study included 36 684 participants from eight provinces across China. Subjects were quartered according to the RC quartile. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between RC and diabetes. RESULTS: After adjusting for potential confounding factors, RC was still significantly associated with diabetes (Q4: odds ratio [OR]:1.147, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.049-1.254, p = .003). In addition, RC and diabetes were still significantly associated when triglycerides (TG) were <1.7 mmol/L (Q4: OR: 1.155, 95% CI: 1.005-1.327, p = .042), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) <3.4 mmol/L (Q4: OR: 1.130, 95% CI: 1.011-1.264, p = .032), or HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol) ≥1.0 mmol/L (Q4: OR: 1.116, 95% CI: 1.007-1.237, p = .037). In the stratification analysis, elevated RC was significantly associated with diabetes in subjects with systolic blood pressure (SBP) <140 mm Hg and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) <90 mm Hg, 60 ≤ estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≤90 ml/min per 1.73 m2 , younger than 55 years old and female. CONCLUSION: In the Chinese community, RC is significantly correlated with diabetes, even when TG, LDL-C, or HDL-C were controlled within the appropriate range recommended by the guidelines.

Prediabetes with hypertension or prehypertension increases the risk of cardiovascular events. Lipid accumulation product (LAP) is a powerful marker of visceral obesity. The current study aimed to explore the relationship between LAP and hypertension and prehypertension among prediabetic individuals. A total of 12,388 prediabetic participants from the REACTION study were recruited. LAP was calculated from waist circumference and fasting triglyceride levels. Multiple logistic regression models were conducted to assess the relationship between LAP and hypertension and prehypertension. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that elevated LAP was associated with hypertension (Q2: odds ratio (OR): 1.263, P < 0.001; Q3: OR: 1.613, P < 0.001; Q4: OR: 1.754, P < 0.001) and prehypertension (Q2: OR: 1.255, P = 0.005; Q3: OR: 1.340, P = 0.002; Q4: OR: 1.765, P < 0.001). The results of the stratified analysis showed that prediabetic people with higher LAP levels and characterized by overweight, normal weight and a high waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) were more likely to have hypertension, and prediabetic people with higher LAP levels and characterized by overweight, normal weight, a high WHR, age <65, and low and high levels of physical activity were more likely to have prehypertension. In conclusion, visceral obesity assessed by LAP is significantly associated with hypertension and prehypertension in the Chinese prediabetic population.

AIM: Studies on the relationship between remnant cholesterol (RC) and arterial stiffness (AS) are limited. This study aims to investigate the relationship between RC and AS and to explore RC, total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), non-HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, lipoprotein combine index (LCI), and TC/HDL-C, which are lipid parameters most strongly associated with AS. METHODS: A total of 4653 participants from the REACTION (Risk Evaluation of Cancers in Chinese Diabetic Individuals) study were recruited. AS was defined as a brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity of ≥ 1400 cm/s. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to detect its association with lipid parameters (RC, TG, TC, HDL-C, LDL-C, non-HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, LCI, and TC/HDL-C). RESULTS: Logistic regression analysis showed that compared with other traditional or non-traditional lipid parameters, the association between RC and AS was the strongest (odds ratio (OR) 1.59, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.30-1.95, P<0.001). In the stratified analysis, RC was significantly associated with AS in both sexes and at any age, as well as blood glucose, blood pressure, and body mass index levels. Besides, RC and AS were still significantly associated when TG<1.7 mmol/L (OR:1.58, 95% CI: 1.02-2.45, P=0.04), LDL-C <3.4 mmol/L (OR:1.32, 95% CI: 1.01-1.73, P=0.041), HDL-C ≥ 1.0 mmol/L (OR:1.67, 95% CI: 1.34-2.08, P<0.001), or non-HDL-C<4.1 mmol/L (OR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.10-1.82, P=0.007) are controlled within the appropriate range. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, compared with traditional lipids and lipid ratios, RC is more strongly associated with AS. The association between RC and AS remains significant even when TG, LDL-C, HDL-C, or non-HDL-C levels are controlled within the appropriate range.

BACKGROUND: The association between the Chinese Visceral Adiposity Index (CVAI) and urinary albumin to creatinine ratio (UACR) has not been illustrated. The current study aimed to investigate the association between CVAI and UACR and to compare the discriminative power of CVAI, triglyceride, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with UACR in the Chinese community population. METHODS: This study included 34 732 participants from the REACTION (Risk Evaluation of cAncers in Chinese diabeTic Individuals) study. Binary logistic regression analyses were performed to detect the association between CVAI, triglyceride, BMI, WC, WHR and UACR. RESULTS: Binary logistic regression analysis showed that, after adjusting for potential confounders, in women, CVAI (odds ratio [OR]:1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.01-1.34) and triglyceride (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.04-1.33) were associated with UACR, whereas BMI, WC, and WHR were not associated with UACR; in men, CVAI (OR: 1.24, 95% CI: 1.02-1.50), WC (OR: 1.21, 95% CI 1.00-1.48), and triglycerides (OR: 1.18, 95% CI 0.97-1.44) were associated with UACR, whereas BMI and WHR were not associated with UACR. Stratified analysis showed that the correlation between CVAI and UACR was stronger in the population with 5.6 ≤ fasting blood glucose (FBG) <7.0 or 7.8 ≤ post-load blood glucose (PBG) <11.1 mmol/L, FBG ≥7.0 or PBG ≥11.1, systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg. CONCLUSIONS: In the Chinese general population, CVAI and UACR were significantly associated in both genders. At higher CVAI levels, the population with prediabetes, diabetes, and hypertension has a more significant association between CVAI and UACR.

The NAC gene family is one of the largest plant transcription factors (TFs) families and plays important roles in plant growth, development, metabolism, and biotic and abiotic stresses. However, NAC gene family has not been reported in passion fruit (Passiflora edulis). In this study, a total of 105 NAC genes were identified in the passion fruit genome and were unevenly distributed across all nine-passion fruit chromomere, with a maximum of 48 PeNAC genes on chromosome one. The physicochemical features of all 105 PeNAC genes varied including 120 to 3,052 amino acids, 3 to 8 conserved motifs, and 1 to 3 introns. The PeNAC genes were named (PeNAC001-PeNAC105) according to their chromosomal locations and phylogenetically grouped into 15 clades (NAC-a to NAC-o). Most PeNAC proteins were predicted to be localized in the nucleus. The cis-element analysis indicated the possible roles of PeNAC genes in plant growth, development, light, hormones, and stress responsiveness. Moreover, the PeNAC gene duplications including tandem (11 gene pairs) and segmental (12 gene pairs) were identified and subjected to purifying selection. All PeNAC proteins exhibited similar 3D structures, and a protein-protein interaction network analysis with known Arabidopsis proteins was predicted. Furthermore, 17 putative ped-miRNAs were identified to target 25 PeNAC genes. Potential TFs including ERF, BBR-BPC, Dof, and bZIP were identified in promoter region of all 105 PeNAC genes and visualized in a TF regulatory network. GO and KEGG annotation analysis exposed that PeNAC genes were related to different biological, molecular, and cellular terms. The qRT-PCR expression analysis discovered that most of the PeNAC genes including PeNAC001, PeNAC003, PeNAC008, PeNAC028, PeNAC033, PeNAC058, PeNAC063, and PeNAC077 were significantly upregulated under Fusarium kyushuense and drought stress conditions compared to controls. In conclusion, these findings lay the foundation for further functional studies of PeNAC genes to facilitate the genetic improvement of plants to stress resistance.

BACKGROUND: Urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) is a sensitive marker of kidney injury. This study analyzed the prevalence of different metabolic phenotypes and investigated their relationship with UACR in Chinese community adults. METHODS: This study involved 33 303 participants over 40 years old from seven centers across China. They were stratified into six groups according to their body mass index (BMI) and metabolic status: metabolically healthy normal weight (MHNW), metabolically healthy overweight (MHOW), metabolically healthy obesity (MHO), metabolically unhealthy normal weight (MUNW), metabolically unhealthy overweight (MUOW), and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). Increased albuminuria was defined as a UACR ≥30 mg/g. RESULTS: The percentages of MHNW, MHOW, MHO, MUNW, MUOW, and MUO were 27.6%, 15.9%, 4.1%, 19.8%, 22.5%, and 9.6%, respectively. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the MHO group (odds ratio [OR] 1.205; 95% CI, 1.081-1.343), MUNW group (OR 1.232; 95% CI, 1.021-1.486), MUOW group (OR 1.447; 95% CI, 1.303-1.607), and MUO group (OR 1.912; 95% CI, 1.680-2.176) were at higher risk of increased albuminuria compared to the MHNW group. Subgroup analysis indicated that the risk of increased albuminuria was further elevated among regular smokers in men aged 40 to 55 years old with abdominal obesity. CONCLUSIONS: Among Chinese community adults, increased albuminuria was associated with increased BMI whether metabolism was normal or not, and those with abnormal metabolism were at greater risk of increased albuminuria than those with normal metabolism. These findings suggest that overweight or obesity or metabolic abnormalities are risk factors for chronic kidney disease.

Background: Obesity, especially visceral obesity, seems to be one of the most decisive risk factors for chronic kidney disease. A Body Shape Index (ABSI) is an emerging body size measurement marker of visceral obesity. This study aimed to explore whether ABSI is associated with albuminuria in Chinese community adults. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 40,726 participants aged 40 or older from seven provinces across China through a cluster random sampling method. ABSI was calculated by body mass index, waist circumference, and height. Increased albuminuria was defined as urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) ≥ 30 mg/g, indicating kidney injury. For ABSI, we divided it by quartile cutoff points and tried to determine the association between ABSI levels and UACR by multiple regression analysis. DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) was plotted using literature and expert consensus to identify potential confounding factors. Results: The average age of subjects with elevated UACR was 61.43 ± 10.07, and 26% were men. The average age of subjects with normal UACR was 57.70 ± 9.02, and 30.5% were men. Multiple logistic regression analysis was conducted and demonstrated that the ABSI quartiles were related to elevated UACR positively (OR [95% CI] Q2 vs. Q1: 1.094 [1.004, 1.197]; OR [95% CI] Q3 vs. Q1: 1.126 [1.030, 1.231]; OR [95% CI] Q4 vs. Q1: 1.183 [1.080, 1.295], p for trend < 0.001) after adjustments for confounding factors. The stratified analysis further showed that with the mounting for ABSI levels, elevated UACR more easily occurred in the people characterized by the elderly, men, and hypertension. Conclusions: In Chinese community adults, people with higher ABSI levels can be deemed as high-risk individuals with UACR elevation, and it will be beneficial for them to lose weight and significantly reduce visceral fat.

Objectives: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of interferon and endocrine side effects, including their incidence, evaluation, and management. Methods: PubMed was searched through March 7th, 2021, by 2 authors independently (LH Wang and H Zhao). Early phase I/II, phase III experimental trials, prospective and retrospective observational studies were included. Stata 16.0 (StataCorp LLC, 16.0) was the main statistical software for meta-analysis. The weighted incidence and risk ratio were estimated for primary thyroid disease and diabetes mellitus. Results: A total of 108 studies involving 46265 patients were included. Hypothyroidism was the most common thyroid disorder, followed by hyperthyroidism. IFN α+RBV treated patients experienced hypothyroidism in 7.8% (95%CI, 5.9-9.9), which was higher than IFN α (5.2%; 95%CI, 3.7-6.8) and IFN ß (7.0%; 95%CI, 0.06-23.92). IFN α+RBV treated patients experienced hyperthyroidism in 5.0% (95%CI, 3.6-6.5), which was higher than IFN α (3.5%; 95%CI, 2.5-4.8) and IFN ß (3.4%; 95%CI, 0.9-7.5). The summary estimated incidence of painless thyroiditis was 5.8% (95%CI, 2.8-9.8) for IFN α, and 3.5% (95%CI,1.9-5.5) for IFN α+RBV. The summary estimated incidence of diabetes was 1.4% (95%CI, 0.3-3.1) for IFN, 0.55% (95%CI, 0.05-1.57) for IFN α, 3.3% (95%CI,1.1-6.6) for IFN α+RBV. Conclusions: Our meta-analysis shows a high incidence of endocrine adverse events provoked by IFN, further reinforced by combined RBV treatment. Purpose: The optimal adiposity index that is strongly associated with hypertension or prehypertension remains inconclusive in Chinese population. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Chinese visceral adiposity index (CVAI) and hypertension and prehypertension, as well as to compare the discriminative power of CVAI, visceral adiposity index (VAI), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHtR), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with hypertension and prehypertension in Chinese general population. Patients and Methods: A total of 34732 participants from REACTION study were recruited. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed to detect the association between adiposity indices (CVAI, VAI, BMI, WC, WHtR, WHR, LDL-C) and hypertension and prehypertension. Results: Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that compared with other obesity indices, CVAI remained significantly associated with hypertension and prehypertension (Hypertension: odds ratio (OR) 3.475, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.158-3.824, p<0.001 in total subjects; OR 2.762, 95% CI 2.369-3.221, p<0.001 in men; OR 3.935, 95% CI 3.465-4.469, p<0.001 in women, Prehypertension: OR 2.747, 95% CI 2.460-3.068, p<0.001 in total subjects; OR 2.605, 95% CI 2.176-3.119, p<0.001 in men; OR 2.854, 95% CI 2.465-3.304, p<0.001 in women).In a stratified analysis, CVAI was significantly associated with hypertension and prehypertension at any level of blood glucose, age or estimated glomerular filtration rate(eGFR). Conclusion: CVAI is significantly associated with hypertension and prehypertension. CVAI shows the superior discriminative ability for hypertension and prehypertension compared with VAI, BMI, WC, WHtR, WHR and LDL-C in Chinese general population.

Plant surfaces are covered with cuticle wax and are the first barrier between a plant and environmental stresses. Eceriferum (CER) is an important gene family involved in wax biosynthesis and stress resistance. In this study, for the first time, 34 CER genes were identified in the passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) genome, and PeCER proteins varied in physicochemical properties. A phylogenetic tree was constructed and divided into seven clades to identify the evolutionary relationship with other plant species. Gene structure analyses revealed that conserved motifs ranged from 1 to 24, and that exons ranged from 1 to 29. The cis-element analysis provides insight into possible roles of PeCER genes in plant growth, development and stress responses. The syntenic analysis revealed that segmental (six gene pairs) and tandem (six gene pairs) gene duplication played an important role in the expansion of PeCER genes and underwent a strong purifying selection. In addition, 12 putative ped-miRNAs were identified to be targeting 16 PeCER genes, and PeCER6 was the most targeted by four miRNAs including ped-miR157a-5p, ped-miR164b-5p, ped-miR319b, and ped-miR319l. Potential transcription factors (TFs) such as ERF, AP2, MYB, and bZIP were predicted and visualized in a TF regulatory network interacting with PeCER genes. GO and KEGG annotation analysis revealed that PeCER genes were highly related to fatty acid, cutin, and wax biosynthesis, plant-pathogen interactions, and stress response pathways. The hypothesis that most PeCER proteins were predicted to localize to the plasma membrane was validated by transient expression assays of PeCER32 protein in onion epidermal cells. qRT-PCR expression results showed that most of the PeCER genes including PeCER1, PeCER11, PeCER15, PeCER17, and PeCER32 were upregulated under drought and Fusarium kyushuense stress conditions compared to controls. These findings provide a foundation for further studies on functions of PeCER genes to further facilitate the genetic modification of passion fruit wax biosynthesis and stress resistance.

During growth and morphogenesis, plant cells respond to mechanical stresses resulting from spatiotemporal changes in the cell wall that bear high internal turgor pressure. Microtubule (MT) arrays are reorganized to align in the direction of maximal tensile stress, presumably reinforcing the local cell wall by guiding the synthesis of cellulose. However, how mechanical forces regulate MT reorganization remains largely unknown. Here, we demonstrate that mechanical signaling that is based on the Catharanthus roseus RLK1-like kinase (CrRLK1L) subfamily receptor kinase FERONIA (FER) regulates the reorganization of cortical MT in cotyledon epidermal pavement cells (PCs) in Arabidopsis. Recessive mutations in FER compromised MT responses to mechanical perturbations, such as single-cell ablation, compression, and isoxaben treatment, in these PCs. These perturbations promoted the activation of ROP6 guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) that acts directly downstream of FER. Furthermore, defects in the ROP6 signaling pathway negated the reorganization of cortical MTs induced by these stresses. Finally, reduction in highly demethylesterified pectin, which binds the extracellular malectin domains of FER and is required for FER-mediated ROP6 activation, also impacted mechanical induction of cortical MT reorganization. Taken together, our results suggest that the FER-pectin complex senses and/or transduces mechanical forces to regulate MT organization through activating the ROP6 signaling pathway in Arabidopsis.

Flavonoids play a key role as a secondary antioxidant defense system against different biotic and abiotic stresses, and also act as coloring compounds in various fruiting plants. In this study, fruit samples of purple (Passiflora edulis f. edulis) and yellow (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) passion fruit were collected at five developmental stages (i.e., fruitlet, green, veraison, maturation, and ripening stage) from an orchard located at Nanping, Fujian, China. The contents of flavonoid, anthocyanin, proanthocyanin, and their metabolites were determined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS), activities of key enzymes involved in flavonoid metabolism were measured, and expression profiling of related genes was done using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results revealed that total flavonoids, anthocyanins, and procyanidins were found to be increased in the fruit peel of both cultivars with fruit maturity. Total flavonoids, anthocyanins, procyanidins, flavonoid metabolites (i.e., rutin, luteolin, and quercetin), and anthocyanin metabolites (i.e., cyanidin-3-O-glucoside chloride, peonidin-3-O-glucoside, and pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside) were found abundant in the peel of purple passion fruit, as compared to yellow passion fruit. Principle component analysis showed that the enzymes, i.e., C4H, 4CL, UFGT, and GST were maybe involved in the regulation of flavonoids metabolism in the peel of passion fruit cultivars. Meanwhile, PePAL4, Pe4CL2,3, PeCHS2, and PeGST7 may play an important role in flavonoid metabolism in fruit peel of the passion fruit. This study provides new insights for future elucidation of key mechanisms regulating flavonoids biosynthesis in passion fruit.

Fruit sweetness being an important factor of organoleptic quality directly affects the consumers' preferences for fresh fruit consumption, and is influenced by the composition and quantity of sugars. In this study, four soluble sugars (sucrose, fructose, glucose, and sorbitol) were identified and quantified in plum fruits cv. 'Huangguan' at four different maturity stages (fruitlet, green, veraison, and mature stage). The results revealed that sucrose and glucose are major soluble sugar components at the fruitlet and mature stages, respectively. RNA-Seq analysis was carried out and 6,778 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, including 121 genes involved in sugar metabolism. Furthermore, a total of 39 transcripts of 8 gene families encoding key enzymes related to the metabolism and accumulation of soluble sugars were separately identified. ERD6L (gene 103322904) was involved in keeping a balance of glucose between the inside and outside of vacuole. SS (gene 103333990) and SDH (gene 103335104) regulated the accumulation of fructose at the green stage. SDH (gene 103335104) controlled the degradation of sorbitol at the green stage. SS (gene 103333990) and PFK (gene 103333391) regulated the degradation of sucrose at the early stages of fruit development. Moreover, NINV (gene 103331108) regulated the accumulation of total sugar in plum. Genes 103321334 and 103335689 were important bZIP transcription factors that regulate the accumulation of glucose and fructose in fruits. Twelve DEGs were selected and validated to observe the relative accuracy of transcriptome sequencing data using qRT-PCR. Gene expression patterns were consistent between qRT-PCR and RNA-Seq data, indicating the reliability of RNA-Seq data. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The results of this study provided new insights into comprehensive understanding of the genetic control of sugar metabolism and accumulation in plum fruits.

Organic acids are key components that determine the taste and flavor of fruits and play a vital role in maintaining fruit quality and nutritive value. In this study, the fruits of two cultivars of passion fruit Yellow (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa) and purple (Passiflora edulis f. edulis) were harvested at five different developmental stages (i.e., fruitlet, green, veraison, near-mature and mature stage) from an orchard located in subtropical region of Fujian Province, China. The contents of six organic acids were quantified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), activities of citric acid related enzymes were determined, and expression levels of genes involved in citric acid metabolism were measured by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The results revealed that citric acid was the predominant organic acid in both cultivars during fruit development. The highest citric acid contents were observed in both cultivars at green stage, which were reduced with fruit maturity. Correlation analysis showed that citrate synthase (CS), cytosolic aconitase (Cyt-ACO) and cytosolic isocitrate dehydrogenase (Cyt-IDH) may be involved in regulating citric acid biosynthesis. Meanwhile, the PeCS2, PeACO4, PeACO5 and PeIDH1 genes may play an important role in regulating the accumulation of citric acid. This study provides new insights for future elucidation of key mechanisms regulating organic acid biosynthesis in passion fruit.

Fruit quality is certainly influenced by biotic and abiotic factors, and a main quality attribute is the external appearance of the fruit. Various possible agronomical approaches are able to regulate the fruit microenvironment and, consequently, improve fruit quality and market value. Among these, fruit bagging has recently become an integral part of fruits' domestic and export markets in countries such as Japan, China, Korea Australia and the USA because it is a safe and eco-friendly technique to protect fruits from multiple stresses, preserving or improving the overall quality. Despite increasing global importance, the development of suitable bagging materials and, above all, their use in the field is quite laborious, so that serious efforts are required to enhance and standardize bagging material according to the need of the crops/fruits. This review provides information about the effects of bagging technique on the fruit aspect and texture, which are the main determinants of consumer choice.
